Start Something
That Matters

Blake Mycoskie, the founder of TOMS shoes, begins his book, Start Something That Matters, with the classic poem “Success” by Elisabeth-Anne Anderson Stanley.

To laugh often and love much
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children

To earn the appreciation of honest critics
endure the betrayal of false friends

To appreciate beauty
To find the best in others
To leave the world a bit better
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition

To know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

Personally, I have never worn or owned a pair of TOMS shoes. However, lots of my “cool” friends religiously buy TOMS and always brag on how they are saving the world with each purchase. Other than the motto, “Sell a pair of shoes today. Give a pair of shoes tomorrow,” I really knew nothing about TOMS.

This was about to change. Once I opened the book, it was hard to put down. Start Something That Matters is a fast and informative read. It gives us a better understanding and appreciation of Blake Mycoskie’s business and philosophy. His storytelling reminds us of simple truths that are necessary for success that we seem to forget in the hustle and distractions of our daily lives.

His book helped me simplify and focus on achieving my goals. Start Something That Matters is a great read, and a book I’ll most likely read many times over. “Highly recommended for those ready to make a difference.”

I still haven’t bought a pair of TOMS shoes yet, but I did get a pair of TOMS sunglasses. =)
